okay let’s talk about english for a second

in linguistics we learned about how with english pronunciation rules

technically

fish can be spelled ‘ghoti’ and still be pronounced the same way

in the word ‘enough’ the gh makes an F sound

in women, the o makes an ‘ih’ sound

and in words like solution or tution, the ti makes a ‘sh’ sound

so

ghoti can be pronounced ‘fish’.

the end.

But isn’t the reason we say those letters in those words that way because of the total formation of the word.  Like, gh makes an F sound because it’s at the end of the word.  But when gh comes at the beginning of a word, like ghost, it makes a hard-g sound.

And the reason why ti makes a shh sound is because of the total sound of “tion” as “shun”.

So no, ghoti cannot be pronounced fish.

so at like 1 am yesterday my friend and i were talking and for some reason we were talking about languages and then just mid conversation i stop and i look at her and say “slurred language.  slanguange.  slang.” and she just stared back at me like she just witnessed the creation of the universe

heh

that’s not actually where it comes from (we don’t really know, but best guess is it comes from cons’ language - as in the language cons speak in, since slang was originally used to talk about the language used by criminals and such), but that is a fun idea
